New species of parrot discovered in Mexico

A rare new species of  parrot endemic to the Yucatan has been discovered, it has been announced today.  It is believed that their numbers are limited to fewer than 100 birds.  The species appears to have evolved from white-fronted parrots (Amazona albifrons) native to the region 12,000 years ago.  The blue-winged Amazon parrot stands approximately 25cm tall and has a short, loud and repetitive call. It was discovered by Miguel Gómez Garza, an ornithologist and vet at the Autonomous University of Nuevo León in Monterrey and named Amazona gomezgarzai after him.
