Highlights of Thailand

A comprehensive two-week tour to show the variety of Thailand with temples, the River Kwai, waterfalls, rainforest adventure and ending with a few days relaxation on the coast at Krabi.

Highlights: Bangkok – Kanchanaburi – Ayutthaya – Surat Thani – Khao Sok – Krabi

Day 1

You will be met on arrival at the airport for the transfer to your hotel. Rest of the day at leisure.

Day 2

A full-day excursion to see the hidden gems around Bangkok. Board a long-tail boat up the Mae Klong River and stop at Wat Bang Kung to explore a small chapel completely enclosed within the roots of a banyan tree. Visit King Rama II Memorial Park and Museum, housing art objects of the 18th century in four buildings that feature classical Thai architecture.

Next is the Amphawa floating market, which is frequented almost exclusively by Thais. Locals congregate to buy and sell everything from cooking pots to fresh flowers to wind-up toys. The area around the market features open-air restaurants and canals full of colourful boats.

Day 3

Visit Wat Po, one of Bangkok’s oldest and largest temples, famous for the 43m reclining Buddha. The tour continues at Lak Muang, Bangkok’s city pillar, before heading to the famous Grand Palace and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha (Wat Pra Kaew), the most revered shrine in the Kingdom.

Lunch is included at a riverside restaurant before boarding a longtail boat to explore the klongs, Bangkok’s maze of canals and waterways to see parts of Thai traditional life which have disappeared from most of Bangkok.

End the day with a visit to Wat Arun, the Temple of Dawn, before returning to your hotel.

Day 4

Bangkok - Kanchanaburi

Departure transfer northwest through the city and out through the suburbs, past emerald-green rice paddocks to the infamous Bridge over the River Kwai in the Kanchanaburi province. The journey will take two - three hours, depending on traffic.

The Chung Khai War Cemetery gives an impression of the circumstances in which the Burma Railway was built by prisoners of war, Thai and Burmese conscripts and enforced labour brought in from Malaya and the Dutch East Indies during the Second World War. Approximately 13,000 POWs died and some 80,000 to 100,000 civilians. We include a stop at the Thailand-Burma Railway Centre as well as a train journey across the bridge.

Continue your journey to your hotel.

Day 5

Morning excursion to the visit the Erawan Waterfall, named after the three-headed white elephant of Hindu mythology. You will spend a couple of hours here, with time to walk up all the way to the top of the waterfall or to swim in the crystal clear water at one of the many levels of the falls.

Free afternoon and evening.

Day 6

Kanchanaburi - Ayutthaya – Surat Thani

Journey north to Ayutthaya. Ayutthaya was the capital of Siam from the 15th century until the 18th when it was destroyed by the Burmese. The Thais moved their capital to Bangkok (Krung Thep) in the 1770s.

As a centre of distinctive art and architecture, Ayutthaya preceded modern Thailand. The Buddhas from the Ayutthaya-period are some of the most treasured in the land.

You will visit some of the historical temples such as Wat Sri Sanpet, Wat Phananchoeng and Wat Yai Chai Mongkol.

Lunch is included in a local restaurant.

In the afternoon continue by road to Hualumpong Railway Station in time to board the night train to Surat Thani.

Day 7

Surat Thani - Khao Sok

You will be met at Surat Thani railway station for the transfer to Khao Sok with glimpses of tropical rural life in southern Thailand en route.

Afternoon river trip by canoe trip along the Sok River. The canoes are very stable and safe; life jackets are provided as well as a local river guide to paddle. Sometimes hornbills can be seen flying high overhead or reptiles basking in the sun on the riverbanks. From the canoe you can experience some of the last areas of primary rainforest, a world that has changed little in thousands of years.

Excursion to the Elephant sanctuary included.

Overnight at a rainforest lodge or camp.

Day 8

Khao Sok

Excursion to Cheow-Lan Lake by local long-tail boat. This man-made lake is surrounded by Limestone Mountains and tropical rainforest. There are more than a hundred islands in the lake which is more than 60 km long. There is time to dip into the lake’s emerald water, if you wish.

Return to your rainforest lodge or camp in the afternoon.

Day 9

Khao Sok

Free day for optional activities and excursions.

Day 10

Khao Sok - Krabi

Morning excursion on foot into the rainforest, with a great variety of exotic plants, tropical hardwood trees, orchids, palms, ferns, bamboos and mosses. Keep your eyes peeled for gibbons, macaques or leaf monkeys and birdlife.

Onward transfer to your hotel in Krabi.

Days 11-13

We include a full day excursion to Phi Phi island, reputedly one of the most beautiful islands in the world with lunch at a local restaurant.

Other days at leisure.
