Thailand is a great destination for family holidays with wonderful food, friendly people and lots to do. We will adapt activities and excursions on this two week trip according to your own interests.
Highlights: Bangkok – Kanchanaburi – Ayutthaya – Khao Sok – Andaman Coast
Day 1: Arrival transfer to hotel. Rest of the day at leisure.
Day 2: Amphawa Floating Markets
Pick-up at 07:00, for a full-day excursion to see the hidden gems around Bangkok. Board a long-tail boat up the Mae Klong River and stop at Wat Bang Kung to explore a small chapel completely enclosed within the roots of a banyan tree. Visit King Rama II Memorial Park and Museum, housing art objects of the 18th century in four buildings that feature classical Thai architecture.
Next is the Amphawa floating market, which is frequented almost exclusively by Thais. Locals congregate to buy and sell everything from cooking pots to fresh flowers to wind-up toys. The area around the market features open-air restaurants and canals full of colourful boats. Afterwards we return to Bangkok arriving at your hotel around 19:00.
Day 3: Best of Bangkok
Meet your guide after breakfast and head to Wat Po, one of Bangkok’s oldest and largest temples – famous for the 43 metre long reclining Buddha. Visit Lak Muang, Bangkok’s city pillar, before heading to the famous Grand Palace. See the Temple of the Emerald Buddha (Wat Pra Kaew), the most revered shrine in the Kingdom.
After lunch at a riverside restaurant board a longtail boat to explore the klongs, Bangkok’s maze of canals and waterways, to discover parts of traditional Thai life which have disappeared from most of Bangkok.
End the day with a visit to Wat Arun, the Temple of Dawn, before returning to your hotel.
Day 4: Transfer from Bangkok to Kanchanaburi province. You'll drive northwest through the city to the suburbs, then through emerald-green rice paddy fields. The drive will take around two-three hours depending on traffic.
Visit Chung Khai War Cemetery. This gives an impression of the circumstances in which the Burma Railway was built by POW's in WWII. Also visit the Thailand-Burma railway centre and then take a train ride across the infamous bridge over the River Kwai before ending the day at your hotel.
Day 5: Morning visit to Erawan National Park and Waterfall. You can walk up all the way to the top of the waterfall or have a swim in the crystal clear water at one of the many 7 levels of the falls.
Free afternoon. Do let us know if you would like us to arrange additional activities and excursions. There is fantastic hiking in the area and caves nearby. You can go white-water rafting, elephant-trekking or visit an elephant project, go bamboo-rafting or kayaking.
Kanchanaburi - Ayutthaya – Surat Thani
Travel north for a full day visit to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ayutthaya, once known as “The Venice of the East” and home to Portuguese, Dutch, French, British, Japanese and Chinese merchants. It was the capital of Siam from the 15th century until it was destroyed by the Burmese in 1767.
Transfer to Hualumpong Railway Station to board the night train to Surat Thani. We usually book 1st class sleeper cabins.
Day 7: Arrival transfer from Surat Thani railway station to your lodge in Khao Sok. You will catch glimpses of tropical rural life in southern Thailand en route.
After lunch there is a relaxing jungle river canoe trip down the Sok River passing Limestone Mountains and cliffs covered with exotic tropical vegetation. Sometimes hornbill birds can be seen flying high overhead or reptiles basking in the sun on the riverbanks. Visit an elephant sanctuary before returning to your lodge.
Day 8: Today you will explore Cheow-Lan-Lake by local long-tail boat. The man-made lake is surrounded by limestone mountains and tropical rainforest, scenery that has been compared to Guilin in China and Halong Bay in Vietnam. There are more than one hundred islands in the lake.
During your stay there should be time for a tropical jungle walk, an excellent opportunity to explore one of the world’s oldest rainforests, to see a great variety of exotic plants, tropical hardwood trees with huge roots, orchids, palms, ferns, bamboos and mosses. Gibbons can often be heard and you might spot a leaf monkey swinging through the branches.
Day 9: Transfer to Krabi for a few days of rest and relaxation on the Andaman coast. We will advise on beaches and hotels.
Day 10: Free day
Day 11: Excursion to Phi Phi Island
Phi Phi Island is said to be one of the most beautiful islands in the world. It is also a good site for Scuba diving. The tour program is reliant on the weather and tide conditions so we cannot confirm full details but we hope to visit Maya Bay, the most famous beach on Phi Phi Island, Pileh Cove, monkey beach and Viking Cave . There will be time for scuba diving, sightseeing, snorkelling and swimming.
Days 12-13: Free Days
Departure transfer from Krabi for your flight to Bangkok and onward flight connection.
